gnome-2.9.2 compile from source?

hey guys new to this forum anyway i want to know about compiling gnome-2.9.2 from source. you see mandrake did not include the latest gnome so i thought if its possible to compile the latest development source on top of the exsisting gnome?

will the current one be replaced by the compiled one?

any advice?
