I just installed WINE last week so assumed it was recent? Had trouble doing that as well but it seems done. Will see if I can figure out how to update. ( Mandriva 2011 )
I found out how to show hidden files. Here is where I am at so far.
--------------
Ok the hidden folders allowed me to find and click the exe.
IE started once. When I opened a tab it quit with an unspecified error.
It will not start any more. I created a SymLink on desktop but all that happens is that a blank Wine desktop window opens for a few seconds then closes.
I find in /.wine/windows two IE folders. ie7 and ie8 both contain executables. In the /Program Files folder there is just one, internet explorer folder.

paulkruger, I guess you have to use Mandriva International Backports:
Add Mandriva Linux software media
because official Wine binaries are outdated for this distro : )
This means Wine folder contains mess.It will not start any more. I created a SymLink on desktop but all that happens is that a blank Wine desktop window opens for a few seconds then closes.

In such case the first thing is to remove .wine directory. Assuming you haven't installed important Windows software in it. The clean directory will be recreated on the next Wine launch.
The second thing is to know Wine version. Please run this in terminal:
wine --version
and CopyPaste the output here.

Okay, I have since upgraded from Fedora 15 to Fedora 16.
I have compiled wine 1.3.32 from source.
I installed IE8 via the winehacks method.
I now have a working IE8 running under wine...but it did not work until I applied the reghack discussed here.
