    Question Optical drive not mounting

I cannot seem to find the optical drive. When I insert a disk the drive spins up and I see the activity light blinking but I can never access the drive from the desktop.

When I create a desktop icon for the CD it does not work.

    Mandriva 2011 - K3.0.8

What is on the CD? Is it just a data CD?
If you do not get a pop-up asking you what you want to do with the CD, look in the /media folder and see if you have anything there.

    Question

No. As stated in the post nothing happens on screen at all. This particular CD contains a windows install file I want to install with WINE. I have tried other CD's but what is on them makes no difference at all.

Drive spins, I hear it seeking and see the activity light but Mandriva does nothing. Zip, Nada, Zero.

On Setup for Bios the system recognizes the drive as expected.
It is an IDE set master on first channel as it came from Dell.

Boot HDD is a Serial ATA drive. ( 2TB )

Side note: I can plug in an external USB drive and use that but does not solve the problem of the internal drive. Can boot from external drive as long as I unplug internal, but not from internal CD.

I think what yancek is saying is that it is possible that the CD mounted, but did not open the contents of the CD in a file browser, or put an icon on the desktop.

You can confirm by opening a terminal and doing:
    Code:
    ls -l /media/
Are you sure the OS/kernel recognizes the optical drive? Try this to view info on all attached disks:

    Code:
    grep -H . /sys/block/[hs]*/device/{model,media}
Say your device is sr0, run dmesg and pipe it to grep to look for info about it:
    Code:
    dmesg|grep sr0
    or simply
    Code:
    dmesg|grep -i cd-rom
Also, you can see if udev (or whatever) has detected it and put a symlink in /dev/:
    Code:
    ls -l /dev/cdrom
Once you know your device, try a manual mount, e.g.:
    Code:
    mkdir /mnt/cdrom
    mount -t iso9660 -o ro /dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom

    Here is result:

    [orlando@localhost ~]$ grep -H . /sys/block/[hs]*/device/{model,media}
    /sys/block/sda/device/model:ST2000DL003-9VT1
    /sys/block/sr0/device/model:CD-R/RW SW-252S
grep: /sys/block/[hs]*/device/media: No such file or directory
    [orlando@localhost ~]$ dmesg|grep sr0
    sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 48x/48x writer cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
    sr 0:0:0:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0
    [orlando@localhost ~]$ ls -l /dev/cdrom
ls: cannot access /dev/cdrom: No such file or directory
    [orlando@localhost ~]$ mkdir /mnt/cdrom
mkdir: cannot create directory `/mnt/cdrom': Permission denied
    [orlando@localhost ~]$ mount -t iso9660 -o ro /dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom
mount: only root can do that
    [orlando@localhost ~]$ su
    Password:
    [root@localhost orlando]# mkdir /mnt/cdrom
    [root@localhost orlando]# mount -t iso9660 -o ro /dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom
mount: no medium found on /dev/sr0
It seems the drive is recognized to a point but still cannot seem to mount it.
