Let me re-phrase your question:
Can anyone tell me how to use tree with Nautilus?
I see you use Mandrake 10.1? Since this version, Mandrake is using Nautilus 2.6.x which is configured by default in spacial mode rather than navagational made (like in version 2.4.x). Some "smart" people will spend time to explain you how spacial mode is smarter to use. Me, I just backed out to Navigational to get my tree back (among other stuff). To do this, I didn't find it in the prefence (still wonder why...). You need to got to the gconf-editor
Then, apps + nautilus + preferent
And tick the "always-use-browser" option. re-open Nautilus and here we go the nice navigational mode. Now you can toggle the side pane from "information" to tree.

If you're using KDE, try konqueror. I think it's great.
