having trouble getting the install dvd to start
Other notes: My harddrive already has Linux partitions available.

Did you go into your BIOS and change the boot order of your devices, to boot from the DVD first?
Also, did you burn the ISO as a bootable file on a bootable device? There's a subtle difference here, and you might have just burned the files to the disk as copies. Check the menu options on your software package. Hope this makes some sense to you! I may not have understood you correctly...I am always doing that which I can not do, in order that I may learn how to do it. - Pablo Picasso
