    you are in the wrong directory then. "cd" to the directory where the hero tarball is.

    ok i change directory to cd home/flint/Documents, then i typed in ls and this appeared

    heroes-0.5.tar.gz Wine/
    icandyjr_tb_4.jar skype-0.93.0.3-mdk.i586.rpm
    iMeshV4.exe SkypeAPIdescription1.0.pdf.part

    then i typed in [flint@jppearce Documents]$ tar -zxvf heroes-0.5.tar.gz
    and it went downa long lsit of stuff,

    then i typed in ls and this appeared

    heroes-0.5/ iMeshV4.exe SkypeAPIdescription1.0.pdf.part
    heroes-0.5.tar.gz Wine/
    icandyjr_tb_4.jar skype-0.93.0.3-mdk.i586.rpm

    and then i typed in

    [flint@jppearce Documents]$ cd heroes-0.5
    [flint@jppearce heroes-0.5]$ ls

    then this appeared

    acconfig.h ChangeLog configure.in install-sh* missing* src/
    acinclude.m4 config.guess* COPYING Makefile.am mkinstalldirs* THANKS
    aclocal.m4 config.sub* doc/ Makefile.in NEWS TODO
    AUTHORS configure* INSTALL man/ README

    then i typed in more install and it came up with like a basic install help file
    after i typed in

    download and install SDL

    nstallation failed:
    file /usr/lib/libSDL-1.2.so.0 from install of SDL-1.2.8-1 conflicts with file from package libSDL1.2-1.2.7-2mdk

    What now?

    try it with the "--replacefiles --force" options
