    Php/Apache help

I've just installed PHP and Apache on my Mandrakelinux 10.1 edition. However, when I attempt to store PHP-files with Screem, they work fine, but when I open and store them with Gedit, they'll change icon to this blue-planet document, and I'll get a warning later, when trying to open the file, regarding it being a php-script blablabla... Apache will also produce a blank page when editing them with Gedit. I'm a newbie on Linux, so could somebody please explain to me why this happens?
