    Unfortunately I can't do that.
    The start box appears over near the mouse pointer. WHen i click on System then Configuration, the box that opens appears to the left of the system menu and right over the mouse pointer. For some reason the system must think the mouse is doing something since the box disappears upon expanding the configuration menu.

    I need some way of accessing this configuration panel without using the start menu.

    go to start > run and type drakconf.

    It might be something Drakconf or DrakConf. If none of these work, just type konsole and you'll get a CLI. From there, type drak+<tab> and you should get it.
