All ptys in use

I just installed xxgdb on my Mandrake 10.1 box. I went to run it and it stated:

[hacksaw@localhost hacksaw]$ xxgdb
xxgdb: all ptys in use

I poked around to try and figure out what's going on and found this and similar things. Unfortunately, the document it points to is missing in action.

I searched some more and things seemed to be pointing to permissions on either /dev/pty* or on xxgdb itself. I don't see /dev/pty* on my box, so I'm assuming that's a distribution difference. I looked at xxgdb's permissions:

[hacksaw@localhost hacksaw]$ ls -l `which xxgdb`
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 89816 Aug 16 2004 /usr/X11R6/bin/xxgdb*

I then tried:

chgrp tty xxgdb
chmod g+s xxgdb

based on some things I saw, but that didn't fix the problem.

Has anyone else seen this? Does anyone have any pointers? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I *think* that /dev/pty* is really called /dev/tty. I just went through this trying to get talk working, but alas my box is at home, and I'm not. I'll give more when I get home.

In the mean time, what's the output of

ls -l /dev/tty*

You might also try tts* or (worst case) tt*
