New to Linux
Hi,
I just installed Mandrake 10.1 and everything seems to be working fine. I installed Mozilla Firefox and ran into a few issues.
First:
I read that new programs should be installed in usr/local/bin
I did not have permissions to install here (seems like it should prompt me for a password?)
I could only install it under my home directory
Second:
I would like to create a shortcut on either my desktop, taskbar, or start menu using the firefox icon. Any help here would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Matt

i hope u r the administrator of your linux box. if so, u can always change to root and install a software.
$ su
<root password>
#
now that u r in root shell, u can install almost anything anywhere.
Your 2nd issue :
if u r using KDE, then Right-Click on your desktop, select New Link to Application. In the window tht opens, specify the necessary commands and comments and the icons.
for GNOME, Right-Click on your desktop, select New Launcher.
