Hi,
This modem is most likely a winmodem and requires some confguration to get working under linux. Check out this tutorial to get more info:

If I may make a suggestion, go with an external serial modem. The Actiontec 56k serial modem has always worked flawlessly for me in those instances where broadband is not available. The Best Data V92 serial modem is also a good choice. With an external modem, you will notice more stability and better performace under Linux as well as under Windows.
