Regarding amaroK, I've noticed huge memory leaks with it if it runns for more than a few hours.

A few hours would be a bleedin' miracle! it crashes as soon as it finishes scanning the media folder. I tried to do a backtrace by running gdb or something in the shell then duplicate the crash, that was the only time it didn't crash. Probably something to do with being in the shell as root. As soon as I exited the shell, wreckage everywhere! It even took kde with it.
I wasted all day yesterday trying to get it working.
