If there is a line in /etc/inittab that says:
id:3:initdefault:
change the 3 to a 5. (Or if it is some either number, just change it from that to 5)

I found the file /etc/inittab which said :
id:3:initdefault:
and changed this to 5.
Yet when saved and rebooted, text version still appears. The file has been changed to 5.
This option says X11.
Any ideas ?

Logged on as root and tried both
startx
and
editing /etc/inittab to change from 3 to 5
The editing still shows the text login screen.
startx shows error messages below :-
Using authority file /root/.Xauthority
Writing authority file /root/.Xauthority
Using authority file /root/.Xauthority
Writing authority file /root/.Xauthority
execve failed for /etc/X11/X (errno 2)
giving up
xinit: No such file or directory (errno2): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error
Checking the /etc/X11/ directory shows no file named X
Do I need to reinstall ?

Did a reinstall and found the problem - did not configure video card during initial install.
Now works fine.
