    Mandrake starts at shell


    Hello there people, a linux n00b here..
    I installed Mandrake Linux 10.1 on my pc and it was working fine, installed KDE and it works quite well.. i can browse the internet , watch movies, listen to songs
    but since yesterday when even i start my machine, i kinda land up in the shell, but if i type startx i end up in KDE. My question is that is there any way that i dont have to type startx everytime i start my computer..

    In some what you have changed your run-level from 5 to 3.
    Yet it is quite easy to fix.
    If you enter the file /etc/inittab with any prefered text editor, you will find a line that look like this
    Code:
    id:3:initdefault:
    change the no 3 to a 5
    Code:
    id:5:initdefault:
    Save and re-boot. Now your system should startup with X as your primary run-level

    thanks for such a fast reply swemic.. really appreciate it... but i cant seem to save it in that folder..it says access denied.. any reasons?

    Oh, sorry, I was not clear enough. You have to be "root" when you do this change.
