    I have been thinking of purchasing a USB external drive. Can an operating system be loaded onto this drive with lilo or grub activated from a floppy?

    it should be possibel as long as the lilo or grub on the floppy points to the correct locations for the vmlinuz file as well as the correct root partition.

    There are some versions of linux which are designed explicitely for this purpose, but off the top of my head, I can't remember which distro it is. Check www.distrowatch.com for more info as well as this article http://openfacts.berlios.de/index-en..._USB_key_HOWTO
