I've got scored a free 1.8 ghz 512 ram off the school and 400 - 600 mhz, 128 ram off my friend.
Would linux run on both of them efficiently?

Fedora would definitely run just fine on the 1.8GHz machine...for the older machine (mostly because it's only 128Mbs of memory) I would recommend something a bit more lightweight...maybe VectorLinux running IceWM as the window manager (really, pretty much any distro running IceWM or fluxbox, etc. would work fine...just not sure if Fedora still includes them).
There are two major products that come out of Berkeley: LSD and UNIX. We don't believe this to be a coincidence.
