Ok, it's working... to summarize:

To install Java Runtime Environment for Red Hat on firefox:

cd /usr

mkdir java
(to make the java directory for installation)
4.

cd java
5. Download self-extracting rpm from http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp into usr/java
6. If necessarry, change the permission of the file you downloaded to be executable with:

chmod a+x jre-1_5_0-linux-i586-rpm.bin
7. Create rpm to install with:

./jre-1_5_0-linux-i586-rpm.bin
8. Install the package with:

rpm -iv jre-1_5_0-linux-i586.rpm
9. Be sure to set permissions for the file to be available for use:

Go to: /usr/java/jre1.5.0_09/plugin/i386/ns7

chown [username] libjavaplugin_oji.so
chgrp [username] libjavaplugin_oji.so
This gives it complete access to user.

9. Go to firefox plugins directory:

cd /usr/lib/firefox/plugins
(or wherever your firefox plugins directory is)

10. Create a symbolic link with:

ln -s /usr/java/jre1.5.0/plugin/i386/ns7
/libjavaplugin_oji.so
Done deal..make sure preferences..content...enable java is checkmarked in the Firefox menu..go to http://java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml to test it out..Hope this helped!
