Anyone Have a good link for a walkthrew?

Ok guys I did the whole google search thing and I can't find anything. WHat I need is a walkthrew on the steps of recompileing my kernel. I know some or most of the steps and I know what all I want done to the kernel when I config it and do a make everything goes smooth but as soon as I get to the make install I would get an error saying the /lib/modules/<filename it wants> wasnt there. I found the problem with that and got it fixed. Now I got the make install to work but when I re boot and try to use it it says Kernel Panic and somehting abount the image link not being there. Is there a step I missed? How do I get Mandrake to see the link or even create 1 for that matter. Still learning all the in's and out's of linux.
