my mandrake is setup as follows
/ = hda7
/home = hda9
if i reinstall and format only hda7 will i be able to access anything i have previously downloaded ...

re-installation query
my mandrake is setup as follows
/ = hda7
/home = hda9
if i reinstall and format only hda7 will i be able to access anything i have previously downloaded and stored in /home/downloads
and should i move all in
/var/cache/urpmi/rpms/
to my downloads directory before formatting and reinstalling

Yes, that is correct. However it is always a good idea to backup the system first before doing any such thing.
