boot knoppix live from usb drive

hi, i've got mandrake linux 10.1 installed on my laptop (compaq presario).
My dvd drive has stopped working and i decided to buy a usb dvd drive...
i wanted to boot knoppix live cd from the usb drive with lilo but it did'nt work and i cannot or i don't know how to upgrade my bios since i have no floppy drives...
so i'm asking if someone could tell me how to boot from the usb drive without upgrading my bios knowing that i have windows xp and mandrake installed and that i'm using lilo...
or if there is a way to upgrade my bios without floppy drives...
    thanks...

I think generally bios upgrades are just applications now and you don't need to boot from them, certainly in the case of dell. Thing is they're Windows executables so you may still need that installed. There is a download called Smart Boot Manager, and I think there is a CDROM iso, but you're stuck there too with no drive

I would see if you could get the BIOS download, if it's just an executable you may be okay and get to do that BIOS upgrade.
