I just got an answer from iriver's customer support:

Creative players are cheaper initially but they aren't in the long run. I know lots of people from my school that bought the Creative Zen Jukebox or Ultra Zen or whatever and their hard drives always fail. I bought an iPod and I really like it, the battery life could be a bit more but no matter - it's still an excellent machine that won't break on you.
IMO, you should get an iPod and SuSE that way you can manage it perfectly with kio_ipod it works for me when I'm in SuSE and I need to quickly add a song or two to it. Otherwise I just boot into Win to manage my iPod under iTunes.Registered Linux user #393103
