This is an interesting problem that probably doesnt depend on the distribution. I recently installed Mandrake 10.1, with OpenOffice 1.1.3 . I can print well from the OpenOffice applications, for example the writer. However, when i try to do the same thing from console, e.g.

lpr dark_and_stormy.doc
, the printer takes in the page and prints out a line or two of smiley faces, diamonds, hearts, alpha and beta symbols, among other weird characters. It is an HP Deskjet 932C, which was otherwise detected fine.
