Linux newbie having trouble installing linux

[im trying to install madrake 2005 LE]

so i took an older computer that i got years ago (it was actually preinstalled with lindows) the computer is
amd duron 900 w/ 256mb of ram. i used to run xp on it but for some reason inspired to give linux a shot on it.

i used windows fdisk and deleted every partition on the disk. i put the dvd i downloaded into the drive and restarted. i get some loading screens with a progress bar, then i get the message
    "insmode '' (marfile) failed

i've also gotten this message when using another mandriva 10 dvd i downloaded
    could not mount compressed loopback.

can anybody tell me what im doing wrong?

Are you sure of the quality of the DVD you downloaded?? By that I mean, did you check the files after you downloaded them??
