LE 2005 installation

Hello all,

I need to know whether I am going completely in the wrong direction or not.

I am a complete newbie to linux. I bought Mandriva LE 2005 and tried installing it onto my laptop :
Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo D 7830, Pentium4 2,66Ghz, 512Mo ram, 40Gb HD.

Unfortunately the screen turns black just after the start of installation and nothing happens.
I tried the text installation and it returns an attempt to kill init (gosh !) with the kernel panicking. The exact details are on the picture here :. Bigger picture available here

This happens both with my 40Gb HD (NTFS formatted and containing WinXP) and with my 20Gb HD (Fat32, completely empty and mounted in place of the 40Gb one). So I think this is not a hard drive issue.

Of course, I am not asking for the miracle solution tutorial; but, am I missing something important here ? Should I do / not do something big ? Is installing linux on laptops only for experts ?

Try booting the CD again, but using this command:

linux acpi=off

Not sure it will work, but it just might...

If that boot option doesn't work, try some of the others. There should be a few.

The command

 linux noapic

did the job and I am now writing this from Firefox, under Mandriva LE 2005.
A big step forward for me
