hope this is what you need
I am assuming you are in "X" . For simplicity copy the "gz" to your home directory. Right click on the file go to actions, extract to, then extract to something like /home/youruser/firefox . When it is done, go to wherever you extracted it and doubleclick on "firefox". There you have it.
If you want to replace the button for konqueror by your start menu, Rightclick on the Konqueror button, go to properties, go to the application tab, under command, browse to your firefox program. This is mine '/home/whimpy/firefox/firefox'

I have installed mandriva 2006 powerpack with FF 1.06...
I removed the packages containing "firefox" and did as you said with FF 1.5.
Now when I install extensions, I see them but they don't work...I assume it happens cause I didn't remove completrly ff 1.06 ??
thanks
I solved this by canceling mandriva's hot key "ctrl"+"tab" and "last tab" extansion strated to work
