In Mandriva there's the option to 'Browse available software' in one of the menus: it's part of a suite of package installation apps. Once you're browsing you can search by categories, or type in keywords. The tool is very effective for identifying relevant packages... As long as you pick the right search criteria that is.

I am also brand new to Linux. Just installed Linux Suse 10.1, and have similar if not identical problem.
Linux installed just fine, no probs, updates all done, rebooted to start, no probs, entered the password still going fine, tab to the password field and its like the keyboard is no longer connected?
You can type whatever, but nothing can be entered in the password field?
Entering other things like Root or root and no password just give an Incorrect Login error message?
Tried a couple of other keyboards, result is identical.
Apart from that, everything seems fine. Just doesn't work yet.
Ah, and yes, the command line behaves in the same way.

I have now read the thread some more.
    Gotta go try stuff.
    Back soon
