I somehow doubt that mDNSResponder is what's killing your system (take that with a LARGE grain of salt, though)...I would guess that it's whatever is trying to load next.
Shot in the dark, but have you tried booting using acpi=off? There should be a screen at the boot prompt that you can access that would show you how to do this (usually it's by pressing F1). Booting with noapic (or a failsafe mode, if available) might net you some progress as well.
Did you test your X configuration during the install? Technically, you usually should get to a command prompt even if X fails, but hey - it's something to try.There are two major products that come out of Berkeley: LSD and UNIX. We don't believe this to be a coincidence.
