    KDE Upgrade Failure?

I upgraded to 3.5.2 and when KDE loads the log on sign still says 3.4 and whenever I try to open my DEVICES window it says....Device: Protocol not found?

How am I to see my devices?

    Any help is appreciated.

Not sure, but take a look in /etc/kde/ and /etc/kde/kdm/ for any files named *.rpmnew.

If you've edited any configuration files, the upgrade versions are renamed with an .rpmnew extension. Then it's up to you to go in and transfer your changes to the new version and rename it.

In particular, kshorturifilterrc has a [Protocol] section.

    kshorturifilterrc

    What is that?

I did not do anything else other than Follow the Steps listed in SoS.

Is it a new problem to you that the Devices will not open?

All I know about kshorturifilterrc is that it is a configuration file in KDE's configuration directory and it has a [Protocol] section--which makes it suspect for your problem.

I haven't used KDE in a while, and no, I've never seen that problem. But I have observed miscellaneous odd things resulting from upgraded configuration files not being applied. That is not unique to KDE.

    Try this:
    • Open a terminal window (bash shell) so you have it ready,
    • Try to open your DEVICES window again to cause the error,
    • In the terminal window in your home directory, type "ls -tora"

That will give you a list of files, including dot files, with last-modified files last. What are the last few files? .xsession-errors? others? Look at them and see if they have error messages.

Do the same for the configuration files in ~/.kde/share/config/.
And as root, look at /var/log/messages.
