KDE & GNOME upgrades

Howdy all...the noob is back. I've figured out a lot since my last problem (no HD space and no X) and I've even added a 2nd hard drive!

Now here's what I want to learn. I'm trying to upgrade from the "default" KDE 3.4.2 and GNOME 2.10 that came with my Mandriva 2006 PowerPack. The "Konstruct" thing seems tricky and I'm not 100% sure of myself with it. Same thing with Garnome (not much difference, right?)

So, what is the best and most painless way to upgrade KDE to 3.5.4 and GNOME to 2.16?

Installing Mandriva 2007. :P

You can take a look at the SoS or MDE repos, if you want. They have e.g. the latest KDE.

I've used SoS before...is it wise to download all the KDE 3.5.4 RPMs and install them in GNOME or console? Will that upgrade my existing KDE installation?

(Assuming I'd use rpm--upgrade <blahblah>.rpm)

Most secure option is to uninstall the old KDE, run updatedb as root then for keeping the package information up to date. Then install the new SOS packages, preferrably from a non-gui command line (e.g. boot to init 3 for this).
