linux blinks at login screen then freezes....
Im a linux noob.
I just got finished building a new system and installed XP and it runs just fine. I wanted to dual boot linux as well in order to learn the software. Install went smooth and easy, got to the system config screen and setup my vid as a VESA at 1280X1024 @ 60 hz which ran in test just fine. reboot after install and login screen flashes on monitor for about 2 seconds and then freezes system.
System Specs include:
Asus A8N-SLI premium
AMD X2 64 4200+ dual core
dual XFX Geforce 7900 GTX 512mb SLI
2 gig ram
WD 500 mb SATA Raid hard drive
Sound Blaster X-Fi platinum
viewsonic 20.1" widescreen monitor
750W Power Supply
Any help on getting this linux box working would be greatly appreciated.

Howdy kreepyj:
Being a fellow noob, I think I had the same type of problem. The login screen would flash and then disappear, then the system would 'freeze'. I traced this down to the video card having insufficient memory to run the graphical logon. I booted with tomsrtbt and then changed screen default settings in my XF86Config file to a lower resolution and everything worked out great.
