Well i read a similar thread but didn't figure it out...

What steps should i follow ?

i think i unmuted everything that was muted but i could run alsaconf in the shell .. I got command error.(even ifconf doesn't work and i know for sure that it is a normal unix command ! )

The shell looks like bash , if it is how do i go to the normal shell ?

mind you i am a newbie concerning linux so i know these questions look stupid.. any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

    p.s : My sound card is ESS 1992 3d canyon .

For most ESS audio devices, e.g., ISA audio chips ES18xx and PCI audio chips ES19xx, we believe the Linux kernel has limited embedded driver support already. But ESS is not responsible for the (free) driver code base existing in the Linux world.

this is written on the official page of my sound card manufacturer
