    lost root password

    I need help resetting the master password on a mandriva 2006 machine, I've seen threads to do it but I see to be prompted for root password before getting to the prompt in failsafe mode.

    I get : enter root password for maintenance
    CTRL-D to continue :

    Also with lilo linux single does not work either.

    How do I go about it with boot disk, rescue? seems that was just giving me installation options (via ftp, http, etc...)

    I assume you mean resetting the root password.
    The usual way to do this is to boot with the Installation CD/DVD, hit F1 to select other options and then type rescue at the boot prompt.
