ok, I got to the terminal and I seemed to be able to log in, but I still can't get to a gui.

Its interesting though, I got fed up, tried Knoppix. DSL and FC6 again, and then went back to Mandriva2007 and I didn't have that issue on this install. Perhaps there's a conflict that I didn't accidentally invoke this time with a more limited package selection...
