    shutdown -r now

    ok, I got to the terminal and I seemed to be able to log in, but I still can't get to a gui.

    Okay, you got to the virtual terminal, but did you then type "init 2" to ensure that you have killed all X processes? Once the computer switches to runlevel 2, you should be able to try startx again.

    That's what worked for me, anyway.

    Its interesting though, I got fed up, tried Knoppix. DSL and FC6 again, and then went back to Mandriva2007 and I didn't have that issue on this install. Perhaps there's a conflict that I didn't accidentally invoke this time with a more limited package selection...
