For XGL to work, you will the ATI proprietary drivers (called FGLRX). Unfortunately they are not installed by default in Mandriva 2007 Free edition.
As the name tells it, Mandriva free edition contains only free & open source software. If you want proprietary drivers installed by default, you will need to use a non-free version of Mandriva, such as Mandriva One 2007 (Gnome or KDE edition). Mandriva One is also free of charge.
If you want the same choice of packages in Mandriva Free, then you can add the missing non-free packages following the instructions provided here :
http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/"To express yourself in freedom, you must die to everything of yesterday. From the 'old', you derive security; from the 'new', you gain the flow."
