newbie question. How do you get rid of the Mandriva icon in the background when using the terminal/command window?

not using Mandriva right now but i think you can change Settings -- schema.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

will that work even if you start up mandriva (or any linux if it's a general setting) from mode 3 (purely terminal mode).

No. Mandriva uses splash image at boot up. check the contents of /boot/grub/menu.lst file. is there any 'splashimage' line in it? you can put '#' sign before that line to disable splash image at boot up.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
