This is what happens when i simply copy and paste the instructions from the pidgin howto file:

You must have the GTK+ 2.0 development headers installed to compile Pidgin.
If you only want to build Finch then specify --disable-gtkui when running configure.
[root@localhost pidgin-2.0.1]# `make'
>
> `make check'
> `make install'

Well, do you have the GTK development headers installed?
