Installed the "nano" software option.
I can get the terminla to open with thre menu.lst
I can paste the lines at the end of the list.

Hi,
Back again.
Installed the "nano" software option.
I can get the terminla to open with thre menu.lst
I can paste the lines at the end of the list.
I select save as default.
Exit/quit
reboot
The ubuntu option is missing.
Recheck the menu.lst and nothing different - what i pasted is not there any more.
What could I being wrong?

you are not saving file correctly.
execute this
add Ubuntu Code and press Ctrl+X, Y and Enter key.Code:su nano /boot/grub/menu.lst
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

control plus X
then
Control plus Y
then Enter , on its own.

Got it - finally - thanks.
final solution was getting the lines right , that is to say, not having line wrap.
getting
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.20-16-generic root=UUID=5a3f01c6-01cd-4efa-98e
e-44c92a023588 ro quiet splash
all on one line was the answer, and not wrapping as shown.
