2007.1 Broken-Black screen of death-No GUI

well I've done it.
Trying to get 3D.
In hardware the GeForce 7300 Gt was detected.
In the set up Graphical server it had FX - GeForce 7950.

So i thiought why not try Xorg and select NV.
Well on reboot I got the black screen no GUI.

So i thought lets try /etc/x11/xorg.conf
No file detected.
So i tried to get the auto detect to work (it worked in Ubuntu so why not try mandriva).
sudo cp /etc/x11/xorg.conf /etc/x11/xorg.conf.custom
"file doen't exist"
so
sudo sh -c 'md5sum /etc/x11/xorg.conf > /var/lib/xorg.conf.md5sum'
"doen't exist"
so
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
"doesn't recognise - reconfigure

Help to get back to GUI appreciated - any GUI would be nice at this stage.

My geForce 7300 GT is supported in Ubuntu - but do you think I can get it in Mandriva - not yet.


The only other thing is I can't get the screen saver to work.
Tried the power function and that doesn't work either.

You can use vi or pico too.

The Blue Screen of death is for MS only all right reserved-

So we should pay attention in the titles of our topics, yes if the X server doesn't find the configuration file or the configuration file not correct sure the X will not start and it'll inform you about the error , this is not Crash and not a Death.

As far as i know I have

all three for the 2.6.17-14 kernel
for the
nvidia97xx
thru the software package installer.

OOPs.
The last thing I did last night was to download the driver kernel for the driver, the support module for nvidia97xx-2.6.17.14 and removed 2.6.17.13.
Now I'm back to the non graphic black screen with the penguin.
xorg doen't like the module 2.6.17.14 and syas something like the card doen't support it.

Oh drat - how can I get the GUI back now?
Broken.

hardware still detects geforce 7300 gt.
the Graphical server had FX - GeForce 7950
all three supporting were for 97xx.

I've tried in terminal to
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
doen't recgonise the dpkg-reconfigure command.

Question
What do i need to enter in terminal to get back to square 1 and get a GUI back?

dpkg-reconfigure command is for debain based distros only.
boot up in rescure/recovery mode and set Video Driver value to "vesa" or "nv" in xorg.conf file.
