DNS server?

How do I find out mine for the network configuration settings, please?

That depends on a lot of things. How do you connect to the Internet (modem, ADSL, cable, packet over sheep http://datacomm.org/PoS-InternetDraft.txt)

Also, do you have a single computer connected directly to the Internet, or do you have some kind of Internet router.

Lastly, who is your ISP.

It ought to be quite possible to auto-configure all of your network settings, but we can't help you without knowing what your network is like.

Single computer connection, adsl usb modem, provider is AOL :eek:

What I've been doing up to now in Windows is opening my connection, minimising AOL and browsing with Firefox (as I'm doing now).

The system keeps its DNS settings in /etc/resolve.conf. If your connection uses DHCP to get its settings from your ISP (probably most Internet connections) the DHCP client on your machine will write the DNS servers its using into this file.

Try running "ipconfig /all" on the windows XP box while connected to the internet. It should return the settings for all of your network cards, including DNS servers and so forth.

Thanks for the replies guys, but I've since found out that because I use AOL for my connection, there's no way to make my distro 'see it'.

Which distro are you using? And why do you think AOL wont work with it in particular?

I've heard that it can be tricky to set up but I'm sure it can be done.

Hiya, I'm using Mandriva 2006. I downloaded a piece of software called Penggy, but I can't make head nor tail of it. I've only been using Linux for a couple of weeks, so I'm still rather wet behind the ears:oops: I did manage to install the Nvidia drivers for my FX5500 card (which I was quite proud of!), but getting online is proving to be beyond anything I'm capable of as yet.

If the problem is that you have to use AOL to connect, try installing wine and then using wine, installing AOL. That might work.

Where did you get penggy from? The only site I've found is http://pengisnotaol.piranho.de/ and it seems quite full of broken links.

If you tell us what you've done so far and where you got your programs, we will try and help you out.
