Hi. To get accurate responses to your questions, you need to let us know which desktop environment you are using e.g. GNOME, KDE3, KDE4 etc.
I'm using KDE 4.1
How do I turn off the log on/off sounds?
On the taskbar there is a spanner/screwdriver(Configure your desktop), Click it
Along where it says "Look and Feel" go to "Notifications"
In the "Event source" drop down chose "KDE System Notifications"
then un-check Login/Logout
Then "Apply"
How do I set it so the screen turns off after a period of time on battery?
Laptop Power Control Center,
Someone with a laptop will have to help there
There is some kind of screen saver running showing very nice pictures of the Far East. How do I turn it off?
