There's a site that will walk you through how to add sources for additional software; add the contrib and plf sources:

If you go to the Mandrake Control Center, you can install new software there (or you can use urpmi <packagename> at the command line). Using urpmi is by far the best way to install software within Mandrake.
I've had serious issues with the MDK version of Java. In few rare cases, I'd advice against URPMI, and this is one.
To get your Java to work, you have to do is add the java bin location to your path. You can do this by editing your ~./bash_profile file. If you want it for everyone, you have to edit the /etc/profile (I think)
