Mandriva 2007 (make command)

Hello all,

Sort of a newbie, Since Red Hat 7.

Recently purchased the Mandriva 2007 from osdisks.org (GREAT SOURCE!!)

Followed install instructions, works great Except:

Tried to install Intel 536EC modem, so here goes.....

Downloaded drivers from intel site. Using commands as in the install instructions, went ok until instructions say type "make clean"

The results say

bash: make: command not found.

I checked the Kernels and went back and installed what I thought was any missing kernels. (before this it wouldn't even unpack).

Finally got package to unpack, and proceded to the next step, with no luck.

I am sure that I am doing something wrong.... just don't know what it is.

So any suggestions to what I am doing wrong?... be easy, my linux experience is very little, but from what I have seen of the Mandriva so far, I will definately like it!!!

install build-essential package from installation CD/DVD.

OK I got the build-essentials package installed, however, now when i use the make command i.e. [root@localhost modem]$ make clean

I get the response:
make: *** No rule to make target 'clean'. stop

you have to navigate to the folder where you unpacked files.

so.... I managed to get the make command to work.

instructions say type make clean.... all goes well.

instructions say make 536, so I type "make 536"
response as follows:

module precompile check
current running kernel is: 2.16.17-5mdv
/lib/modules/... autoconf.h does not exist
Please install kernel source
make *** [check] Error 1

my 2 part question now is:

1. Which module do I install that includes autoconf.h (I assume that the module wasn't installed during the installation process).

2. The next command that is required is make install. Can I expect to see the same results (missing module) from this command?

Some type of reference would be nice to see which modules have which commands. That way I would be able to look them up, and install the modules as necessary.

all you need is 'kernel source'. its also available in installation CD/DVD. i dont think you would need any other module after installing Kernel Source.

I am still having trouble with the commands.

make clean works fine
make 536 replies with error:

/lib/modules ..... autoconf.h does not exist
please install kernel source

Maybe I am misunderstanding something, but I installed the utilities(thats how I got the make comand to work). I assume that a file is missing or in the wrong place (autoconf.h?) from the response I get aparently the file is supposed to be in the /lib/modules directory. Am I right in this assumption?

If the file is missing, how do I find it and put it where it needs to be?
