need help installing a usb modem on linux

i just installed mandriva and all the hardware was automatically installed - except for my US Robotics external usb modem. I tried everything, and it still sees it as a scanner lol. any help would greatly be appreciated. thanx.---

What model is it and what chipset does it use? Is it broadband or dialup? I know eciadsl support a few usb modems but they are notoriously difficult to configure in linux.
