su to root

su to root no longer works.Su/type password but then incorrect password.

I can boot as root and use my current root password however in
a normal user enviroment it does not.Never happened until I update.
maybe pam problem not sure?Never set a root password until I had
this problem.Thought a root password would solve the problem.It
did not.Was using the default root password root but stop working.
Hope this extra info helps so I think it was caused by updating since
it was working before.Thanks.
