I've been using Mandrake for a long time now. I started a new job, and for it I got to choose my own distro for the laptop they assigned. I've installed many times, so I don't normally get flustered by any problems.
However, now that it is installed, and most everything is configured how I want, the system will just hard hang, farily often. Usually this will happen during boot, or when I try to log on. When logging on, it usually happens well before I get the KDE splash. Usually when it happens it will happen a second time immedately after. Any suggestions on what I should be looking for? This is getting quite annoying.
Oh, and BTW, why it isn't fully configured is that I haven't yet been able to get suspend to work. I close the lid, and it keeps running.
installing linux on laptops is a bit more specialised than installing it on desktops..
maybe u can try to google for "linux on <insert your laptop's model name here>"? there's lots of web pages on linux and specific laptops.
hope that helps
can you provide more information. Maybe try watching the boot process in verbose mode and see if there are any errors. Or check dmesg. You could also try booting into runlevel 3 to begin with then starting X manually. To see if the problem is your x configuration or something with the boot processes.
you can change the default runlevel by editing: /etc/inittab and choosing 3 instead of five. Hopefully some of this will produce an identifiable error.
