I'm stuck with a linux server. It's already setup and works as a web server. I never operated one further than creating users, changing passwords. I have to put some web pages in it but i don't know where. can you help a desperate totally newbie?
If you have successfully installed Apache, and you see "it works" when you type localhost in your browser's address bar, then you are almost done, you just need to configure httpd.conf file according to your requirements.
You did not mention which version of Mandriva and which desktop environment are you using, but I assume you are using Mandriva 2008.0 with GNOME. Open Terminal and type the following commands to open the httpd.conf file in write mode.
# gedit /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf
(You can use "vi" instead of "gedit". if you are not a gnome user. Google, how to use "vi" text editor. You can also try "kwrite" if you are a KDE user)
A text editor like notepad will appear. Scroll the file down, somewhere in the middle you will see a line like this
Replace the path with the address of the folder your website is in (for example /home/name/website/index.html) so that it points to your own index.html file. Scroll down a few lines further you will see another line like...
Replace the path again with the address of "folder" your website is in (for example /home/name/website). Leave the other options, as you stated you are a newbie.
Save the file, restart Apache using this command
Clear the cache of the browser and restart the browser. You should see your own index.html file in the browser.
Hope it helps
a few more steps
Thanks for the advice.
Before making these steps i need to clarify a few things.
It's Mandriva 2006. About the interface i don't know if it's KDE og GNOME because i did'n know how to start either of them.
I'm fmiliar with vi.
This server is not installed by me and i'm in the situation of learning linux almost from the scratch. I read all the manuals but it's hard to put things together by myself.
I used apache on windows, but on this linux server i couldn't find it.
Could you help me a little more. If i at would least be able to start graphical interface if would be a big step.
Alright, it won't make much of difference, if you are using Mandriva 2006, you better search for httpd.conf file and use the path of that file in the command:
# vi /etc/../.../httpd.conf
and just change the DirectoryRoot path. And don't forget to change this line as well
If you are familiar with "vi" then it doesn't actually matter if you are a gnome or kde user.
If you want to use Apache in GUI mode, probably you'll have to install GUI for Apache, for example Webmin
