Media Player?

I'm very new to Linux and everything, so please bear with me.

I'm running SimplyMepis, and I am having some trouble with playing avi files.
I know at least it is because it is windows media.

What I suppose I am asking is...
What is a good media player I can use that will support most of the media file formats?

Pleasethanks.

I always use Mplayer... just does the job for me though there are others like Xine. But if you want it:
Code:
sudo apt-get update
Then:
Code:
sudo apt-get install mplayer
To get the codecs:
Code:
sudo apt-get install w32codecs
...but you might have to add some repos to your sources to get the codecs. I'm not sure though since I usually just download and install them from the mplayer site.
