Here are two examples of sites where I cannot get the media to play, the first an MP3 and the second a MOV:

Regarding MP3 in Firefox: in my about : plugins page, I find nothing indicating that any plugin is set up to play MP3s. I already have mplayer, w32codecs, and mplayerplug-in installed -- at least, according to KPackage. (Though are all their components in the right directories? I'm not sure.) I get Firefox's message "Additional plugins are required to display..." at the top of the screen, but when I click on "Install Missing Plugins", it tells me,
Regarding MOV in Firefox: mplayerplug-in-qt.xo is installed in /usr/lib/firefox/plugins, and my about : plugins shows:Clicking on the movie link opens up a dialogue asking what Firefox should do with it; options are Open with [kaffeine (default)] and Save to Disk. I can choose each time to open with Kaffeine, but the check box and text for "Do this automatically for files like this from now on" are grayed out. I have no trouble with it defaulting to Kaffeine, but I want Firefox to do that automatically, every time.

Any suggestions how I can (1) get a Firefox plugin to play MP3 audio, automatically, and (2) get a Quicktime MOV to open up in Kaffeine (or other video player) upon being selected?

I forgot to mention that in the "Edit > Preferences > Content > Manage..." section, MOV is not listed as one of the extensions. I don't know how to get it in the list.

MP3, on the other hand, is there. However, when I try to edit the actions, the "Use this Plugin" option is grayed out (can't be selected). Also, "Open them with the default application" and "Open them with this application", while selectable, cannot be changed in their values: they are stuck with "RealPlayer 10" and "kmplayer", respectively. The third action, "Save them on my computer", seems to do nothing -- the same message about lacking the required plugin flashes atop my screen.
