Am I using my gpu and vram?

I am using an old nvidia card with 128mb (fx5200).
I was having problems with it `not going above 1080x768' for awhile.
I don't know how I got it back to 1920x1080 (correct for my 24" monitor)
but I did after lots of things,
It failed after using proprietory nvidia drivers.
The following is a terminal output from the commands at top (dmesg | grep drm)
From reading this I am assuming that it sees the graphics card with 128mb ram
sees the monitor with dvi etc.
then fails at the gpu and reverts to software emulation.
(I am using vga cable and connections)

Am I right in this assumption?
    can anyone tell me more?

I would go to Ubuntu. They sent me the right drivers for video automatically.
You are going about this the hard way when it is easy if installed it will show up in your installed programs list.

    I was using ubuntu `maverick' and `natty/unity'
I changed to peppermint for a lot of reasons and like it.
I had the same problems in ubuntu with graphics card.
Yesterday I was up all day in 1920x1080
Today it is back to 1080x768
    It is driving me nuts.
I would like to know why it keeps dropping back to 1080.
I have tried forcing it with xrandr, etc.
It sometimes seems to respond to
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh -xserver-xorg

A solution to this issue that has been annoying me for a month would be good.
