I'm trying to connect to the Internet via my Vodafone mobile in tethering mode, either directly or via a Netgear wifi dongle but neither seems to work - any ideas?...

there are a few facts missing - but if you search the forum HERE you may find solutions from earlier posts on same topic

are you using KDE or GNOME network manager
USB cable or bluetooth to connect to your phone
    what mobile phone
    what Linux dist

It seems that KDE best works using network manager GNOME version and NOT KDE version

the easiest way to test all basic broadband connectivity still is by using wvdial
wvdial should be available for all Linux dist and is easy to setup

once wvdial connection works, you then may move on to using networkmanager

have a look at this previous thread on same topic - may be that solves your problem
most configuration parts are basically the same for all distributions
